The winner of the Texas Competition receives a Grand Jury Prize of a camera package rental worth $30,000 from Panavision.
Shot in rural East Texas, ABOVE ALL ELSE follows David Daniel, a retired trapeze and high-wire artist who’s found himself in an actual David-versus-Goliath battle against TransCanada’s Keystone XL Pipeline. The $7 billion project, designed to transport tar sands from Alberta, Canada down to the Texas Gulf Coast, just so happens to cut right through David’s property, which he believes will be ruined as a result.
Together with a group of affected landowners and impassioned activists known as the Texas Keystone Convergence, David takes his fight against imminent domain literally to the next level, building a small tree house village turned stronghold to keep the tree loggers at bay. In ABOVE ALL ELSE, John Fiege captures the deeply personal consequences of this enormous international project, where back country conservatives and liberal minded students band together in an acrobatic feat of civil disobedience.
